Our mission is to provide a platform for CS outreach to the greater Houston K-12 community to inspire future computer scientists of all backgrounds, specifically underrepresented minorities in CS. For more information about our volunteer work, please click here.
Our curriculum is designed to teach foundational python programming skills, as well as provide an introduction to concepts fundamental to computer science as a whole.
We're a group of Rice University student volunteers whose goal is to introduce high school students to computer science and the college application process. We hope that our mentorship program can inspire the next generation of innovators and leaders.
This fall, we will be hosting a mentorship program for students interested in computer science and related fields. Students will be put into groups led Rice computer science students. Ever wonder how self-driving cars work? Or what it’s like to work at a company like Google? Technology and computer science is an extremely broad field. This track will provide you with an overview of it. You’ll learn more about different career paths within technology and various popular topics in technology (i.e., artificial intelligence, self-driving cars, how social media works, tech ethics). Your mentors will also serve as a resource for you to ask any questions you have about what it’s like to major in a tech-related field like computer science, how to get research/internship experience, and anything else you’re curious about.
Python is a very adaptable programming language that is used in a wide variety of applications from building web servers to AI. This track will be an introduction to programming in Python and will give you hands on experience through completing a couple of introductory projects. You will have the opportunity to learn about the basic data structures and features of the language and learn the skills to solve further problems using Python.
Whether it’s to connect with friends or order a pizza, people use websites everyday. But have you ever wondered what happens behind the scenes when you open a website or how to make one yourself? In this course, you will learn how to build a website using React, a popular framework for web development that is used across the industry by companies such as Netflix, Facebook, and Airbnb. By the end of this course, you will have your own personal website to showcase and the set of skills you’ll need to create many more in the future.
